Final Semester

Ok, Sorry for being such a bad writer but its not my cup of tea. I tried, but meh. So I’m going to do one final post about my final semester in China. So excluding some weird shenanigans from my school I had the same classes: American Culture, pronunciation, oral english and writing. I actually just finished grading all of the finals so I am officially done with the school and grades 😀 In May I went to Beijing to run the Half-marathon on the Great Wall, I celebrated my birthday, then I went to Mianyang for a going away party of PCV.

My mom got here a few days ago and we were invited to go to shangli with Wang Ding Ming, Joe and Cherie and a bunch of Aaron and my previous Oral English Students. It was a fabulous day, but we were very tired because my mom and I had, had girls night with Marie and Victoria where we had a fantastic dinner, some delicious creme puffs/treats, sangria and wine.

Lunar New Years Travel Part 3 and hopefully the last

Ok, so I made it back to China(Hong Kong). I had a fabulous time in Thailand, all sunny and warm and Hong Kong was being kind of cold. -.- Anyway I got to see my friend Stefanie, whom I had met in Japan and she was in Hong Kong for Chinese New Years to visit her family. BTW, in the mainland they say Spring Festival elsewhere they say Lunar/Chinese New Year its a political thing. So my first evening in Hong Kong I met a nice Korean boy and we went out to dinner together. The next day I got to meet up with my friend Stefanie and we did lovely random things.

We had macaroons(my first time having them at all) then ate mcdonalds then we went and saw Kingsmen: Secret Service which I had no idea what the movie was about but it was awesome. After walking around we took a ferry across the way to Kowtoon, and we just wondered around Hong Kong seeing things.

The next day I met up with my friends Mom, aunt and grandma for lunch. Stefanie and I ended up going up to the Peak which was really interesting but full of people. Apparently they have one main area where they charge people about 50HKD to go up, there are other sections that you can hike too but we were ill-prepared(aka I was freezing and didn’t bring my jacket.) But we got some great photos.

Her mom, Stefanie and I went to a local flower/New Years market which was crammed full of people but it was super interesting there were even some politicians and some Umbrella movement booths as well.

That evening we went to dinner with the whole family, it was super yummy. Sadly I don’t have any photos but it was a great family style meal and I was very glad to have been welcomed by the family. The next day, Stefanie, her uncle, I and his friends went to the annual soccer game. This year it was between New York Cosmos and the Hong Kong Team. We had KFC and watch soccer, talk about a great New Years tradition.

I had a blast in Hong Kong by myself and with my friend/her family. After that I packed up my bags full of wonderful items that I can’t get in the mainland or it was much cheaper in Hong Kong. It was fabulous, I came back with a big brown of thai rice, two flavors of milano cookies, andes chocolates, raspberries(which customs threw away 😦 ) and probably some other things.

I took another 29 hour train ride back to Chengdu then I was headed back to Ya’an.

Finally done with Lunar New Years travels!

Lunar New Years Travel Part 2

Ok, so where was I? Oh right, the Grand Palace.

So I was told that the Grand Palace opened at 930 so after visiting Wat Pho I went walking around the outer edge of the complex. I got to the gate around 845/9 and it was already super crowded. -.- Mostly loud tour groups, I heard mostly Chinese but also some Japanese and possibly Korean. The place was beautiful and I am glad I went and had the experience but man all of the people kind of sucked the fun out of it.

After the Grand Palace, I had to run/ferry back to my hostel in order to check out before noon. I changed clothes then went on a adventure, on the tickets it says that you get free entrance to some sort of teak house,so I went to go find it. After taking a ferry to a random stop, walking like 2 miles then asking a hostel owner where I was going. I ended up on the backside of Teak House Resident where all of the tour buses park. Regardless I finally made it and I realized I should have stayed in the pants I was wearing earlier(all royal residents/places required certain dress code; no shorts, short skirts, etc) so I was forced to by a modesty sarong but it worked out in my favor because it became my towel in the islands. Regardless, it was an interesting house, nice and cool as well(yay air conditioning) and I arrived around the perfect time for an almost exclusive English tour of the house. I was the only native English speaker on the tour which I found funny. I don’t have any photos from inside of the house(it wasn’t allowed), but I do have a few of the outside. I think it was the royal residents of King Rama V, I think.

After the Teak house and some smaller museum/houses on the land, I went to the parliament/government building that was in the same area.(Also free with Grand Palace ticket). It was interesting, they had an audio tour in English that was pretty interesting but I was just getting really tired of the crowds so I didn’t hang out as long as I could have.

After that I headed back to the hostel, packed up my bags(the hostel was nice enough to hold my leather jacket until I returned because I wouldn’t need it in the islands) then headed to the train station. My dumb self had read that there were dinning cars and so I didn’t buy food. The food wasn’t bad but every time I looked there were charging me for something else(fruit, water, spoon, air, just kidding but you get the idea).Regardless the trains were really interesting and I liked how they were chairs that would be flipped down into beds, really really nifty. Although I was ill-prepared for the air conditioning in the train car, so I decided next time to say money and to get in the fan train car(cheaper and no air con) it was much more comfortable with only shorts to wear.

So my first stop was to Koh Samui, most of the time I spent on Koh samui was spent looking for cheap food, laying out tanning or running in the morning. I met some cool British guys and we went walking on the beach in the evening to see the fire spinning.

After another few days of tanning we went to the ‘night market’ the night market on koh samui isn’t that big but it was nice we got some good food. I got some curry, I think, a beer or two, a crepe thingy; I made a kitty friend no surprise to anyone who knows me. After that we headed back to the hostel, I hung out with the boys until they headed out to go partying, I stayed at the hostel because I was transferring to the other island early in the morning.

on the ferry to Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan is known for their full moon parties but I went in between the huge parties and it was pretty cheap to stay there. I met lots of interesting people from all over the world, but no Americans. I think I only met two americans in all of my Chinese New Year’s Travel one in Bangkok who was applying for Peace Corps actually and one in Hong Kong. I got to explore Koh Phangan a bit more than Koh Samui mainly because it was smaller and because my mom is awesome. If I had planned it better I could have gone to Koh Tao for snorkeling but oh well I still had a great time. I would beach hop, meaning I would go to one beach lay out for the awhile, go to another beach maybe go swimming or eat some fruit lay out then on to the next one. It was great I got a bit of a sun burnt but not too badly.

So the reason some of the beaches are named French/Russian etc is because sometimes the resorts on those beaches were mostly catering to French/Russian/Australian etc people so that is how I remember the beaches. Additionally my best beach on the island pick, I’m pretty sure its the smallest beach on the island and the road getting there is under construction and very sketchy but its totally worth it. I could totally imagine having my honeymoon there in the future; very few tourists, a great beach, a lovely restaurant, and a river that flows into the ocean creates an interesting area. I think it was called Haad Tian Sabet(?) but it was great, I met a group from South Africa who were pretty awesome and a very noisy cat.

After a great time on Koh Phangan I headed back to Bangkok, I was only there for two evenings then I flew back to Hong Kong. While in Bangkok I managed to get to Krispy Kreme on Valentines day and I did all of my souvenir shopping at the weekend Market. Which I totally recommend to anyone and everyone who is going to Bangkok, its crazy but really awesome. I met an awesome seller who is a volunteer Japanese/Chinese/Thai/English translator. We got to talking and she sold me a 100% authentic thai silk scarf for like 200 baht(it was normally 350). But regardless I enjoyed talking to her and she gave me a bunch of oranges that I ate later. The next day I had to catch my plane back to Hong Kong.

Lunar New Years travel part 1

Hello everyone,

I am still alive and doing fabulous! So last time I left a post I was on my way to Chengdu for IST training. And of course I got sick like 3 days before IST started, but thankfully when everyone else was getting sick I was over it already. Only real upside to get sick early is you are done with it faster…

Anyway, so that was my last IST and I have to say that the second one is much more relaxed then the first one. I think it may have something to do with the fact that instead of doing 20 gazillion different sessions, its essentially; 3 hours of language in the morning then evening sessions. So besides learning some great(not the most useful but great) chinese words I got to hang out with some cool kids that are in other areas. Also I found out I am pretty good at Pub trivia games but I suck at the quotes section.

So my first leg of my travel was to head down to Guangzhou but my train left one day too late so I had to find a place to stay for one evening. So I stayed with another volunteer who lives in Chengdu, and we went to Ikea(super yummy if a bit expensive) then I took him to the grocery story to buy ingredients to teach him how to cook.

Took a train down to guangzhou and made some friends on the train. I find that when I do my cross stitch on the trains pretty much everyone wants to take photos/give me a thumbs up/or tell me well done etc. Its interesting and different. When I got into Guangzhou I did some laundry and bought the makings for dinner/breakfast. I also had to go find a place to fix my sunglasses because they got broken and I refused to go to thailand without sunglasses.

Next day headed to Hong Kong, met a nice lady on the train who told me if I ever needed help in China that I should contact her organization(lions club international) then I got to chill at the airport for a long time. I got on the internet at one point and forgot how great it is not to have to use a vpn.

After waiting forever in the airport I finally got on my airplane to Bangkok. I arrived pretty late but I was able to get a city bus to a local metro stop. The next morning I got up and went to my cooking class. The teacher was pretty awesome and the food was freaking delicious, I had such a HUGE food baby.

After the amazing class I had to lay down and take a short break from moving. After that I went to the train station and bought my ticket down Surat Thani. After that I went walking around, I tried to not go into Chinatown which is EXACTLY where I ended up. I stopped by a little pharmacy/coffee shop for a delicious ice thai tea, were I met an interesting guy that was from Sri Lanka. After talking with him for awhile about China, I headed out to walk around and I found a pier. I ended up taking a boat to Wat Arun, which is very pretty around sunset.

The following day I got up really early and was planning on doing the whole tourist thing for the day. So I planned on going to Wat Pho(Reclining Buddha Temple) and the Grand Palace. I was told that the Grand Palace was not open until 930am, so I decided to get up early anyway and head to Wat Pho(next door) to see there until the Grand Palace opened.

Christmas celebration

I know I’m late, I get rather lazy when I have no classes and the weather is so cold/dreary outside. So my Christmas Eve was spent giving my final for American Culture, then I spent the rest of the day baking mini apple pies, banana pumpkin bread, and peanut butter truffles. I then went and judge a competition for the college of life sciences they were having an English competition. That evening I went to the gym and worked out, after returning and taking a shower I remembered to make some snickerdoodles before heading to bed. My Christmas day was spent acting Santa Clause, giving out my apple pies and peanut butter truffles. I went over to a friends apartment and they cooked lunched and gave me a cute little night light. I use it for my bathroom since the light is so freaking bright, if I must answer the call of nature at night now I will no longer blind myself.

I was apart of a class Christmas/End of the Year party, in which I won a hat that is WAY too big for me. Additionally we played a game from running man which if you don’t know is a great game in which you have two or more teams and your name tag is on your back. In order to win one team must remove all other teams name tags. While we started I had to go the bathroom, three girls were hiding in the bathroom(cheating) but I escaped them pulling off my name tag. There was a great ruckus of students acting each other’s name tag, I just stood on long the wall and enjoyed the screams of laughter and joy. After I pulled off a few students name tags they realized I was still playing, apparently me being cautious meant to them I was not playing.  My team won and we won lots of treats that I am not a huge fan of so I gave them to other students to enjoy.

In the evening I went over to Rob and Marie’s apartment for a few christmas drinks, snappers, and some good munchies. After that I headed home and skyped with family. The following morning I skyped the other half of my family, so that was the total of my Christmas celebrations.

That weekend I went to Jiangyou to hang out with some other Sichuan PCV’s and we made gingerbread cookies, we played Cards Against Humanities, participated in White Elephant and had a delicious dinner and some yummy treats from a snack street near the Wal-mart.

Had a lovely relaxing weekend in Jiangyou with the peeps. Now I have about three weeks until I head to IST then my freedom! I am traveling to Hong Kong then Thailand I will be there for about 2 weeks then I head back to Hong Kong where I will spend about a week with a friend and her family. For now I am trying to save money for my travels but its harder then one would think even just staying at site and trying to do little. I just found out today that the shoes I bought to wear for the marathon are super painful even just walking around in the them, I walked from one end of campus to another and the balls of my feet were in pain. So now I have to figure out what type of shoes to buy to replace them -.- Ugh, buying shoes online is awful and its even worse because about 85% of the ones I find online I would not be able to try on in my city if I was so motivated to find them.

But I did buy myself a lovely christmas present and I will post a photo when it finally gets here, hopefully today or tomorrow. Its a beautiful paper cut scroll, originally I was going to buy a painted scroll that was beautiful but I have never seen a paper cut one before so I decided to go with unique and I hope it pays me back 10 fold.

Today I have finally finished grading my finals for American culture, tomorrow I shall put the grades in an excel spreadsheet and be free of class/school requirements until March! Yay me, sadly though I do have actual requirements asked of me by Peace Corps for two weeks at the end of January but I am hoping that won’t be too painful.

Sorry it takes me so long to write about holidays or what not but I lose motivation and sometimes I couldn’t be bothered, which is sad but a daily battle here in grey, gloomy, cold Yaan. I look forward to brighter, warmer pastures in Thailand and Hong Kong. Have a great weekend all of my readers.

Cheers

Things my students do/say:

I’m going to start a running post of things my students do/say that is funny, sad, or otherwise entertaining….

  • Grading letters for writing class, my student is writing to someone to get a job tutoring English- “I do good in spoken English”
  • S:Hi, I am looking for a foreign friend. I need your help.
Me:Anyone in particular you are looking for?
S: No, no, no. actually I want to make friend with you. *My face* (-.-)
  • While at the gym a young lady comes up to me-
    • Her”How long do you work out?”
    • Me “Until I finish or the place closes” (note the gym is only opened 730pm-900pm)
    • Her “That is too long, 40 minutes is perfect any longer and your muscles will be too tired”
    • Me “Huh? ok”
    • Her “You don’t want to work out too much, otherwise you will look like a boy. Your legs are already a bit… fat”
    • Me “Ok, thanks”
  • From my American Culture Final: “Chinese are yellow, Americans are white and black. Chinese are speak Chinese, Americans are speak English”

It was a great weekend surrounded by all of the lovely Sichuan, and Chongqing 19’s/20’s who decided to join us. It was lots of fun, food and perhaps a touch too much alcohol. Regardless it was a lot of fun. On the way to Neijiang Aaron and I made a friend with a guy on the train who taught us a card game and I taught them ERS.
That following Thursday was ACTUAL thanksgiving so I decided to host people at my house and to serve non-traditional thanksgiving day food.

We had special fried rice made by Joe and Becky( bottom right corner), Pierre, Dai Ou, and Noah(bottom left corner) brought meatball/vegetable soup. Marie and Rob(top left corner) brought lots of win, I made Japanese style chicken curry, candied carrots, rice, potato soup, cornbread, and pumpkin pie. Aaron brought some homemade hot chocolate.

Ok so I know this one wasn’t as heartfelt as part one but it doesn’t really matter. My second thanksgiving here in China was much better then my first and I hope the same is true for my Christmas. I hope you enjoyed this post, I’m thinking about creating of post of weird things my students say….

Cheers!

Thanksgiving part uno

So hello all 4 readers! I hope everything has been going well and you are preparing for your Thanksgiving with lots of warm thoughts, possibly traveling and too much food. This year I have ended up doing two thanksgivings which I will talk about in my next post this weekend which will include a butt load of photos but I was having trouble sleeping on the train back to Chengdu and I realized that even though I may complain about my students, my university, country etc. I am really lucky in America and in China, so without further ado I will create my short list of things I thankful for specifically here in China. Now the normal things like Family, Friends, Food are included but are not listed I do love you all and are thankful; but this list is mostly just for things I have here in China.

  • An air-conditioner/heater- none of my students and most teachers don’t have this in there house. I have two.
  • A new mp3 player- Mine finally bit it, and my friends were nice enough to get me a new one. After accidentally putting in water and having to put it in rice for a day or two made me realize how much I rely on that tiny thing.
  • Technology(computer, taobao, VPN)- I am privilaged to have access to a computer in general but seeing how little my students know about the world outside of what they are told on CCTV, I am glad I have a VPN. Additionally taobao is great for buying things, I can’t even begin to tell you how many things I have bought on there. Super useful .
  • Ability to exercise- My training for the half marathon has been put on hold temporarily, the fact that I still have lots of options like belly dancing, a gym, or using my computer is more then a lot of my students have or chose to use.
  • Apartment all to myself
  • Ability to travel- Down the road, to the next city or in another country. Many of my students have never left their hometowns or their provinces before coming to college.
  • Access to hot water/washer machine- Many of my students have to pay for it if they want to take a hot shower or wash clothes. I have to pay for gas but thats cheaper in the long run.
  • A Kitchen- A place where I can cook, my students can’t even get a hot plate because it would probably overtax the electricity in the building.
  • People I want to spend time- Now I don’t use the word friend because that’s lazy. I have people here I enjoy spending time with and even cooking for. I have a few students who fall into this category, but I have a great many people here who I don’t mind talking with or hanging out but too long and I get a headache, which might make me a bad teacher sorry.
  • Western food- Either I buy it, make it or have it shipped to me. Regardless is the fact I have access to it, and I am teaching others how to make them. I had a turkey sandwich at Subway on Sunday which was my turkey for Thanksgiving, twas amazing.
  • PC people- Be the medical people, VSV or the other volunteers it is good to know that someone knows what you are going through and can relate. Don’t get me wrong I love my friends in America but they have no idea what being in another country for 2 years is like. Being China, Thailand, Mongolia, Moldova, Morocco, Jamaica, or Peru for two years are all widely different but you still all the connection of being a volunteer for two years in another country that may be widely different or similar to your own.
  • Vote-The fact that I have a choice between two idiots is better then no choice at all. Even though I missed the last mid-term elections I have decided that when I return to America I will be more evolved with the political process.

Ok I think that is it for my random list of things I am thankful for, if I were to sit around for another hour or two I could probably come up with another 10 or so, but this gives you an idea. I will say in addition that I am very thankful for the my friends and family in America who have sent me their thoughts, letters, or packages. Even just receiving a card is so freaking wonderful especially when having a bad day, I almost wish my handwriting wasn’t so bad just so that I could revive the whole sending card phenomenon.

Also I have to say that watching things change/happen in America via the internet is very depressing and it makes me wish I had a few more years not in America.  But at least if I am there and voting maybe I can make a difference.

Also why the heck is it so freaking expensive to live in/around Washington DC. Good lord, trying to find a place to live that is isn’t full of rodents/bugs/mold run by idiots cost minimum 900$ a month. Ugh. I guess I should stop worrying I still have like 8 months before I have to even deal with that….

Regardless I am thankful for things that I have and I look forward to my thanksgiving dinner in a few days. I will post photos from both celebrations here over the weekend.

So catching up school has been school, nothing new and exciting there. But I am glad that I am finishing up my pronunciation class, in the new few weeks I will only have american culture and writing throughout the week. Last month I paid for my half marathon in May, so I only had about 250rmb to last me the entire month. I totally rocked it, I ate butt loads of vegetables that I cooked for myself. At the end of the month I was super excited about getting paid again, that way I could buy fancy things like new running shoes and nutella. That didn’t last long, I traveled to Luzhou for the weekend which was a bit pricey but totally worth it. Also restocking my apartment with food drained me down a bit, but it happens. I am trying to save money so that I can travel this upcoming holiday but it may be short since I used all of the savings. Regardless I shall try!

Anyway to recap we had our Halloween party at English Corner on the 29th, and it was a lot of fun. We had bobbing for apples, card games, halloween music, face painting, costumes, and of course Thriller. Overall it was much better then last year’s party and I had a decent time…

That weekend Aaron and I headed to Luzhou to celebrate the holiday with friends. The first night we went to a bar and had some drinks, twas good. The next day we went roller blading then some people went lazor tagging but I and a few others went to a cat cafe, after that we headed to dinner then another bar for a halloween celebration. They had live music and some cool shows, I don’t have pictures but you can trust me it was cool. The next morning everyone headed out to go home.

After roller blading we headed to laser tag, we found out that at laser tag they only had enough for like 10 people to play at a time. I use this as an excuse to get out of paying more money and going to a cat cafe. 😀

Anything else? Well I lost my voice and now I am getting my first icky sicky of the season -.- The weather is finally getting cool, and all of the babies are bundled up which is super adorable. I will try to take some photos.

In about two weeks I will hopefully have people over for Thanksgiving dinner and I will post some photos. Otherwise nothing new or exciting.

Cheers~!
